Prince of PeaceA Devotional from President Mike SwalmDear Friend of RMC, If you’ve been paying attention to the happenings of the world these days, you’ll know that things are in pretty rough shape. We’re seeing what seems to be an increase in anger, violence, and division. We see countries attacking other countries, people attacking other people, and so much hatred expressed in so many different ways. Some people blame social media, some radicalization, some economic and socio-political differences. But I think if we’re honest, we realize that what we’re seeing now is more an awareness of division than an increase. We are seeing this because we are human beings, and we are an awfully divided and violent bunch. Indeed, even when there were only four people on earth, one decided to kill another! Our human nature, that which drives us to be divided and violent and hateful, is rightly shocked when we hear Jesus referred to as the “Prince of Peace.” And when Jesus says things like “my peace I give to you.” And when Jesus prays that we may be one, as he and the Father are one. Even we, who claim to follow Jesus, so easily fall into the regular habits of our human nature. We argue about denominationalism, worship music, secondary and tertiary theological issues, even the colour of the carpets and pews! Yet Jesus has not changed. Jesus is still the Prince of Peace. The peace that Jesus brings is the peace that is, and will, finally change this world. By following the Prince of Peace, Christians declare themselves to be people of peace. Our lives as followers of Jesus are supposed to be centered around who Jesus is and what Jesus does. When Christians follow Jesus, we follow all of Jesus, even the parts that are difficult and contrary to our human nature. Even the parts that require us to lay down our hatred, our anger, our division, and our insistence on our own self-righteousness. When Jesus calls people, he asks them to deny themselves and take up their crosses daily. Denying ourselves and taking up our crosses means that we set down our insistence on maintaining our natural disposition. We willingly commit ourselves to the way of Jesus, which is the way of the peace of Christ. To follow Jesus is to abandon our own way to embrace the reign of the Kingdom of God that calls all of believers to peace. So when you watch the news, when anger is being stoked and division is being exploited, turn to Jesus who erases those boundaries and camps, and calls us all to be children of God together. Be the people of peace. President Mike Swalm |
