You are my King

A Devotional from President Mike Swalm

I attended a Leader’s retreat recently and the worship leader led us in singing the song “You are My King (Amazing Love)” by Billy James Foote. I’ve sung the song many times before. In fact, as a long-time worship leader myself, I’ve probably led it so often I could play and sing it with my eyes closed. The song is beautiful in its simplicity: “I’m forgiven because you were forsaken…” I sang along without much thought, honestly, until we came to the end of the chorus, where the leader had us repeat a line that started to press on my spirit: “In all I do, I honour you.”

That’s it. 7 short words. We sang the line. Then we sang it again. And again. And most often I would think something like “ok, that’s enough. Let’s move on.” But in that moment God opened my eyes and my ears, and I saw and heard these words in a new way.

This probably isn’t a revelation to you. And I’m not sure it was a new revelation for me. But it hit me square between the eyes.

I do a lot. You do a lot. We’re all busy, running around doing the things we’ve been called to do, the necessary things, the things that just HAVE to get done. But this time I stopped and asked Jesus a question: “do I really honour you in all I do?”

Sure, I honour Jesus when I’m at church. I honour Jesus when I’m speaking in a church or writing a newsletter devotional. But what about the times when I’m on my own, driving to or from work? When I’m watching my son play football or my girls play music? Do I honour Jesus when I’m drinking my morning coffee with my wife or when I’m clinging to the scraps of my frail ego, when I’m alone with my insecurity and anxious about the future? Do I honour Jesus with my words and my deeds and my thoughts and my dreams?

I stopped singing, and I started to pray. I started to ask God to help me and to give me the strength and courage to look at my whole life and to honour Jesus with it all. I prayed that I would honour Jesus in absolutely everything, that there would be no place in my life that would bring dishonour to the name and reputation of the one I claim as my Lord and Saviour.

And the hardest part of that day was that Jesus started to answer. He started showing me where I was not honouring him. Some of them were little spots of laziness, carelessness, or cruelty masked as busyness. Some of them were bigger spots of apathy, bitterness, or a refusal to let things go to him. Some of them were enormous, places of discord between my stated values and my lived experience. And in them all, and in the thousands of places where I will fail again, I sought God’s forgiveness and asked that God would keep revealing those places.

I’m not trying to earn God’s love. And I hope you’re not either. I pray instead that all of us are seeking to submit to the will of God and to bear the name of Jesus well, to bring respect and honour to his name and reputation.

In all I do.

All the best,

President Mike Swalm
